TOKYO: Japanese researchers have created a robot nurse that can lift elderly patients from wheelchairs and beds. Naturally, it looks like a giant teddy bear.

Riba, short for Robot for Interactive Body Assistance, was developed by the state-run Riken research center. Promoters are calling it the world's first robot to lift people in its arms.

Riba can move patients weighing up to 134 pounds in its foam-padded paws and transfer them from beds to wheelchairs. Its cute face is designed to make the 400-pound robot less imposing. Very kawaii.

Only four in 10 of those questioned could recall the best picture winner -- (Iraq war film "The Hurt Locker") -- according to a poll of 700 award show viewers conducted for the Hollywood Reporter by the global research company Penn Schoen Berland.

Nearly seven in 10 viewers remembered that Bullock took home the best actress award for her role in "The Blind Side".

US life expectancy falls

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Life expectancy has dropped slightly for all Americans except for black men, who gained around two and a half months in longevity, a report released Thursday found.
Data gathered by the National Centre for Health Statistics showed that life expectancy for most American men was 75.3 years in 2008, down by one-tenth of a year from 2007.
Women also saw a drop in the number of years they can expect to live, from 80.4 years to 80.3 years, the data show.
Black men, on the other hand, bucked the trend and reached a record-high life expectancy of 70.2 years in 2008, up by 0.2 years compared to 2007.

UK explorers claim fastest Antarctic land crossing

A BRITISH expedition to Antarctica says it has succeeded in establishing a new record - the fastest land crossing of the southernmost continent.
The Moon Regan Transantarctic Expedition said the 10-man team had completed the crossing in under 13 days, smashing all previous records. The total distance covered was 1,945.9km (1209 miles) in 303 hours.
The team set off from the Union Glacier airstrip on 25 November and arrived on the Ross Ice Shelf earlier on Thursday.

PayPal stopped Wikileaks payments on US letter

PayPal has said that its decision to stop people from using its service to make donations to Wikileaks was made after a letter from the US government.
A vice-president at the online payments firm said the State Department had said that the activities of the website were illegal in the US.
PayPal suspended payments to Wikileaks last week, and has been followed by Visa Europe and Mastercard.
Amazon and Swiss bank PostFinance have also cut ties with Wikileaks.

They used more than 12 billion landline calls to create a map of Britons' connections.

"But they don't say anything about how people in those regions interact." His team used records of more than 12 billion anonymised landline telephone calls, to model who Britons frequently spoke to.
These records allowed the team identify the the local telephone exchanges used in the calls.

Playboy artwork sells at New York auction

A Dali watercolour of a reclining nude that once hung in Playboy founder Hugh Hefner's bedroom has fetched $266,500 (£168,500) at a New York auction.
The nude, which featured in a 1967 issue of Playboy, was among 125 artworks owned by the magazine to go under the hammer at Christie's.
